About This Episode

I'm here to officially say that tools like Claude.ai and all other AI tools are here to eat data viz tools like Tableau, Power BI, Looker Studio and more. If I were at any of these companies, I would be concerned to see if the revenue from these giants is starting to drop.  Likewise, I think people working with these tools need to be spending a lot more time on the AI side of things for better analysis. You need to be using these tools so you can double your output rather than be on the wrong side of employment.

[00:00:01] John Wright: Welcome to revenue optimization with StatsDrone. I'm going to talk about data visualization and the AI tools and what you can do with it. So let me just rewind time a little bit. Back in, I think it was June of this year, 2025, I did a presentation at SEO Vibes in Malta, and I was talking about advanced data vis, advanced data analysis, and I had a section there on it where I talked about data visualization using Chatsh Bt. And I was actually working on it where probably about a couple weeks before, I was actually having some success working with Chatsh Bt and doing data modeling, data visualization,

[00:00:40] John Wright: and then Chatsh Bt just got worse. It got worse to the point where I'm like, okay, is this kind of the new normal or is Chatsh Bt going to get better? I didn't know, so I actually had to take my work in that presentation and basically say, I basically told the audience, I just said, I think there's some problems with Chatsh Bt. So it's kind of an unreliable source, and I did preface it by saying, well, what you know to be true anyways with asking AI tools for anything is that there's hallucinations, and then you've always got to treat your data a little seriously going. Is this the right place for it? Is it going to be ingested by something that shouldn't ingest it? Fast forward to a short amount of time later.

[00:01:19] John Wright: I mean, we're not even talking six months. It's just crazy. So the work I'm doing now, I'm spending more time with Claude, but I've been working with all of them like Chatsh Bt, Claude, even testing with Lovable, and the things you can do now are just insane. I actually strongly believe that tools like Tableau and Power BI are going to be kind of eliminated. They're going to be eliminated by just better data tools, and these data tools are going to keep moving their way up into this hierarchy where it goes full circle back into Claude, Perplexity, Chatsh Bt, you name it. I think these are going to be like the real winners

[00:01:57] John Wright: when it comes to building these things. So I'm going to give you a couple more things of context. I'm able to build my own database library in tools like Claude, and it's a bit crazy. I can ask for things that I've never seen before in Tableau or other database tools. I can say, hey, I really like this design, but I want like a model of something else. Can you do it? And it rarely fails. And sometimes I'm asking for what I think is impossible, but I'm saying I don't know if this is possible, but I'm trying to build a solution for, and then I just give it the prompt and I say, I'm just trying. I'm throwing ideas at the table or throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. And most of the time, it finds a solution.

[00:02:36] John Wright: It just does a better job of it. So my job now is to be a better product owner where I'm kind of controlling the narrative and saying, okay, I get what's going on. Let's build a better product and let's kind of guide the user so they get the answers they want and the results they want. And what I believe to be true is that there's two things that play. People building AI tools where you can ask questions of your database, and then the other one is it where you just automate it and say, you know what, I know you can ask questions. That's great. It's a cool feature, but I'm just going to go right to the point and go, I think I can do this faster, easier, with higher accuracy

[00:03:14] John Wright: without risking compromising the integrity of your data or having it in some sort of AI model where the AI model says they're not going to look at your data, but you never know when that's going to happen. So it's just, I'm just shocked at what I'm seeing today. And I'm not really following a lot of people on, let's say, places like LinkedIn that are kind of speaking the same thing. I'm hearing it more in the background, but I'm not seeing someone kind of go full circle and saying, you know, they're publicly stating it. And I'm tempted to state that myself, but I don't know if I want to. I'm sure I might get a couple of haters, but I think it might scare a bunch of people. It might scare the people that are spending their time,

[00:03:52] John Wright: full-time working, building Tableau dashboards, Looker Studio dashboards, Power BI dashboards. I still think there's always going to be a need for these things, but when the fact is you can build them so fast, it just, it changes everything. Like just to give you another example, if I wanted to build a really cool but simple, let's say Google Analytics or Google Search Console dashboard, it's no problem. I can just download the data and I can upload it to Cloud for modeling, and say, hey, I'm trying to model this. Can you help me out? And then you just start building iteration after iteration. You do this a few more times, and then you're able to actually build your own app that you can load on your own server, which means everything's protected.

[00:04:31] John Wright: You know, you're not at risk of someone gaining access to an account with the one exception that you got to make sure that the app that you would be building is secure. But once you have it, you've got everything you want. So whatever data you need access to, if it's your own datasets, then you could build your own dashboards, and the speed at which you're able to build these things is just so much easier and faster than I've ever seen. So I think there's a big opportunity for people, but I also think there is the scary, uncomfortable zone for some people where I think if they don't pivot and learn how AI is going to play a role in data analysis and building out reports and all these fun things,

[00:05:11] John Wright: I think that's what people need to focus on. That's what I'm spending a lot of my time working on, and I just think this is the future. And I think maybe it's going to be less than a year before people realize that, yeah, you can still use Tableau, and Tableau is going to come up with their own really cool AI tools and all that stuff. But I think these things are going to have, like the time is ticking for how much time a company like Tableau has where they don't need to worry, they're owned by big giants, and they're all owned by big giants. But I think we're already in the new realm of data vis and data analytics and, you know, data science, you name it. We're here now, and I think it's up for people to spend the time going,

[00:05:49] John Wright: okay, they need to work at it and see what's around the corner and see what's in the future. So I hope that's helpful to a couple of people. I've made some recordings the past couple of weeks, and I have one guest that I'm going to announce soon who is basically building BI tools. And he said something similar. He's like, yeah, you can build these AI chatbots, but they're kind of useless most of the time because you're expecting your user to put in the time and you're expecting them to be an analyst when a lot of them aren't. So good luck out there on these things. I'm always happy to chat on LinkedIn and talk about data vis. It's something I'm very passionate about,

[00:06:26] John Wright: but I do think that we're in for a crazy disruption. So this whole BI data science analytics industry that we expected to grow massively, I think it will grow, but I think there might be potentially less people, but I don't know. I don't know if this is the AI realization where, you know, back in the, you know, what was it 20, 30, 40 years ago, they said Excel was going to eliminate accounting jobs, and it did the opposite. I hope it does the opposite here, but what I'm seeing initially is that there's a power to eliminate jobs, and it's up to those people that if you're in one of those positions that you level up your skills and you make it such that

[00:07:04] John Wright: it's not that your job gets eliminated. It's that you're able to do more work on less. And if you can do that, then you're going to not just have a job, but you're probably going to get a better paying job and be more important without having to hire three people when one person can do all of that work.
